Porifarma’s CEO Dr. Ir. Jasper de Goeij and a team of colleagues have discovered how a reef-dwelling species of sponge can take up enormous amounts of carbon without growing in size. The sponge Halisarca caerulea has an extremely fast turnover of filter cells. The cell division is extremely fast and the sponge expels ‘old’ cells. Sponges are the ultimate recyclers of the coral reef and explain why the most productive ecosystem on earth, the coral reef, can thrive in the nutrient-poor tropical waters, the marine equivalent of a desert.
